Subscription or commission: how escort listings are paid for

The two models produce very different incentives, and the difference shows up in who owns the client.

The two models produce very different incentives, and the difference shows up in who owns the client.

There are two ways to pay for visibility, and the choice shapes almost everything else about how an escort works.

Commission

The operation takes a percentage of each booking. Nothing is paid when nothing is booked, which suits anyone starting from zero, and the operation has a direct interest in generating bookings because it only earns when they happen.

The cost is control. Commission models generally route the client through the agency, which means the agency holds the relationship. An escort who leaves takes nothing with him, and an escort who is not being offered bookings has no way to find out why.

Subscription

A fixed fee for a fixed period, with the escort keeping the whole booking fee and speaking to clients directly. Terms of six or twelve months are usual on British directories, and the reason given is honest: a new profile takes weeks to start producing enquiries, so a monthly term would be cancelled before it had worked.

The cost is risk. The fee is payable whether or not the phone rings, and the first few months of a new listing are the ones most likely to be quiet.

What each model rewards

A commission operation is rewarded for matching well, because a bad match produces no repeat booking and therefore no further commission. A subscription operation is rewarded for keeping profiles renewed, which means it is rewarded for the escort getting bookings but is paid either way.

Neither incentive is sinister and both produce good operations. The practical difference is that a subscription site has to be judged on whether it selects and markets properly, because it will take the money regardless.

Questions worth asking before signing

  • Does the operation turn applicants down, and on what basis?
  • Who sets the rate, and can it be changed later?
  • Does the client contact the escort directly, or is contact routed permanently through the operation?
  • Is there any charge beyond the headline fee, for placement, promotion or profile changes?
  • How is a profile removed, and how quickly do images actually disappear?

The last one is asked least and matters most. Every escort stops eventually, and the removal process is far easier to establish at the start than at the end.
